Rise In Popularity Of Esports Sees Over £15m Wagered A Year

Following the news that esports is to be introduced to the 2022 Asian Games, William Hill are offering 4/1 that it is introduced to the roster for the 2024 Olympic Games.

“The rationale behind the introduction of esports into the Asian Games is to move with the times and reflect the popularity of video gaming as a competitive sport,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “There is no reason why the IOC can’t follow suit.”

The bookies have certainly seen a growth since they first started betting on the sport  with William Hill reporting that turnover on the sport has grown over 500% since it was first offered in 2015 to the point where the industry is collectively seeing upwards of £15m a year wagered.

“We noticed there was massive potential for esports to be a high turnover product and its popularity with punters is increasing year on year,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “It is as popular, if not more so, than quite a few sporting events that we offer and it would not be a surprise to see it at least talked about in the same breath as the Olympic Games.”
