Mercury Music Prize: Kate Tempest Attracts Punters’ Pounds With A Day To Go

If the betting is to be believed, it is Kate Tempest who will sneak this year’s Mercury Music Prize, with William Hill making her the 5/2 favourite, just ahead of Sampha at 3/1. Those two head the betting by quite some way with Stormzy the 11/2 third favourite.

In terms of where punters are putting their cash, Kate Tempest has attracted the most with 32.5p of every £1 wagered on the overall winner being for the Let Them Eat Chaos artist. Stormzy has also proved popular with William Hill customers, attracting a fair amount of the early cash (leading to him being favourite for a while) although that has dried up recently. He has attracted 24.5% of all Mercury Prize punts with Sampha attracting 14.2%.

Former winners The xx and alt-j have been the two least popular with punters attracting just 1.5% and 1.3% of all cash on the market.

“We have seen a number of different favourites since the shortlist was announced including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Sampha but as the big night approaches, it is Kate Tempest who has been well backed to win this most prestigious of awards,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.
