Bookies Upgrade Grand National Turnover To £250 Million – Definitely Red Could Cost £25 Million
Ahead of the biggest race of the year, bookies are fearing the perfect storm of a Liverpool win followed by a victory for current Grand National favourite, Definitely Red. Liverpool are currently just under Even money to win away at Stoke and Definitely Red is the 10/1 favourite for the National with the double paying 20/1.
“Liverpool are always amongst the most popular football selections every weekend and Definitely Red has been backed into 10/1 favouritism from 33/1 over the course of just one month,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “Definitely Red is in danger of clocking up similar liabilities to the Katie Walsh mount Seabass in 2012 which, had it won, would have cost the industry upwards of £20m.”
A number of William Hill customers will already be feeling flush after a very punter friendly round of midweek football. On Tuesday, Manchester United’s draw with Everton was a small mercy to the bookies after nine of the top ten best backed sides all won while on Wednesday, Liverpool’s draw against Bournemouth was the only silver lining.
“Our initial expectation was that the industry could see up to £225m being wagered on the Grand National however, this week’s punter friendly football results will almost certainly push that turnover figure up to £250m,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.
William Hill Odds:
20/1 Liverpool to win vs Stoke and Definitely Red to win the Grand National
