Naval Gazer Sails In To Top Cop Contention

A FORMER SENIOR sea lord has sailed into contention for the role of Metropolitan Police Commissioner following current incumbent Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe's announcement of an early retirement.

William Hill have introduced Sir Charles Montgomery, former second sea lord and current head of the Border Agency as 8/1 fourth favourite following support, but he still trails three female candidates in the betting.

Hill make Lynne Owens, Director General of the National Crime Agency their 4/1 favourite, with Cressida Dick, a Director General at the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office who served in the Met for over 30 years, at 5/1,and Sara Thornton, the first Head of the National Police Chiefs' Council, 6/1 third favourite.

'This market looks like becoming an arresting spectacle' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
