Michael van Gerwen 8/11 favourite to win William Hill World Championship

  • Over £50 million to be bet on the tournament
  • 72% of bets placed with the sponsors are on MvG
  • Gary Anderson 6/1 to complete a hat-trick of titles
  • 8/13 a Dutch winner, 9/4 English, 7/2 Scottish, 16/1 Rest of the world

The sponsors of the William Hill World Darts Championship have installed Michael van Gerwen as their 8/11 favourite to claim the Sid Waddell trophy.

Mighty Mike has swept all before him this season - winning a record 25 tournaments during the year.  The Dutchman is rated a 1/3 chance to reach the final and 5/2 to record a nine-dart leg.

Van Gerwen’s  main rival looks like being 'The Flying Scotsman' Gary Anderson. The Musselburgh man is looking to claim a hat-trick of world titles and William Hill make him a 6/1 shot to do so.

The only other man to claim a hat-trick of PDC world titles is the sixteen-time world champion  Phil 'The Power' Taylor.

Taylor has shown he still has the temperament for top level competition during his Champions League of Darts triumph this season - and William Hill make him an 8/1 chance to pick up world title number seventeen on January 2.

Other players who are sure to be popular with the punters are two-time champion Adrian Lewis, James 'The Machine' Wade and the flamboyant Peter 'Snakebite' Wright.

Popular outsiders in the field include the dangerous five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld, young gun Benito van de Pas and the current world youth champion Corey Cadby.

The bookies are also offering odds on the nationality of the winner. They are offering 8/13 Dutch, 9/4 English, 7/2 Scottish and 16/1 Rest of the world.

The nine-dart finish is one of the most spectacular sights in sport and William Hill are offering odds on how many there will be during the tournament. They offer odds of 11/10 None, 13/8 Exactly One and 11/4 Two or more.

“Michael van Gerwen is one of the shortest priced pre-tournament favourites to win the world championship in the history of the tournament”, said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny. “Over 62% of pre-tournament bets have been on MvG and it’s hard to argue with the punters given his exceptional form this season.

“Interest in darts is at an all-time high and we’re anticipating industry turnover on this year’s tournament will surpass £50 million for the first time,” said Kenny.

*William Hill are pleased to announce they will donate £9,000 to Parkinson’s UK, the Official Charity Partner of the PDC, for every nine-darter at this year’s tournament.
