McCoy Compares Douvan To Kauto Star

Douvan is missing the Tingle Creek in favour of a potential run in the Hilly Way Chase, but despite skipping the Sandown contest, Sir Anthony McCoy writes in his William Hill blog that the Willie Mullins-trained chaser has the potential to be as good as two previous Tingle Creek winners.

“I think if you could choose one horse in training to own it would probably be Douvan. It’s a huge comparison, but there are similarities with Kauto Star. Douvan has the talent to win over 2 miles and 3 miles and he could be even better over the longer trip. Brilliant champions like Kauto Star and Desert Orchid are capable of doing that. Exceptional horses can win over any distance and make no mistake, Douvan could be exceptional. I’d love to own him.”

There are just six horses left in the Tingle Creek line-up and William Hill’s sporting ambassador thinks Un De Sceaux is the one to beat.

“Willie Mullins must think Un De Sceaux has a good chance of winning as he’s pulled Douvan out of the race. Sire De Grugy got back to a good standard at Ascot and listening to Gary Moore, it sounds like Ar Mad will improve for the run. It would be great to see Sire De Grugy win.”

William Hill’s betting market has changed dramatically during the week, but has settled since the final declarations. God’s Own has shortened slightly to 4-1 from 5-1.

Meanwhile, in the Becher Chase, Alvarado is easily the worst result of the weekend for Hills. He’s the 9-1 favourite for the Aintree feature and notably shorter than the 20-1 available at the start of the week. Colin Tizzard is looking for another big Saturday winner and his Viconte Du Noyer has been cut from 14-1 to 10-1 in the past 48 hours.

“Fergal O’Brien’s yard is in great form and looking at our books Alvarado would be the worst possible result in any race this weekend,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke. “However, it would be no surprise to see Colin Tizzard’s Viconte Du Noyer start favourite, given punters are latching on to anything he sends out at the moment.”
