Aidan O’Brien’s Housesofparliament won the Bahrain Trophy on the opening day of the July Festival at Newmarket. William Hill quote the winner at 12-1 for the St Leger (from 20-1) and 12-1 for the Ebor (from 14-1).

“If only our Housesofparliament were as effective as their equine namesake!” quipped William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

Earlier in the day, Matthew Hancock MP was pipped by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, who claimed victory on Almagest in the historic Newmarket Town Plate.
