Harzand Favourite Despite Weld Concerns + Rogers Backed For Plate
William Hill cut Steve Rogers for the Northumberland Plate following support for the Roger Varian-trained horse. He is now 8-1 joint-favourite from 10-1.
Steve Rogers was heavily backed to win the Chester Cup and started 7-2 favourite, but ran poorly and only finished 12th. However, it appears punters are willing to give him another chance in the Northumberland Plate, back on an all-weather track, a surface which has yielded 3 wins from 4 starts.
“Steve Rogers is the buzz horse again and rather than be deterred by his poor run in the Chester Cup, punters appear to be convinced he can do much better,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.
Dannyday is the other 8-1 joint-favourite, with a slight question mark over whether he will actually get in to the race.
In the Irish Derby market, Harzand remains the 5-4 favourite, despite some concerns from trainer Dermot Weld. The Derby winner has apparently taken time to recover from his exertions at Epsom, but is still likely to take his chance at the Curragh.
“Harzand is still favourite, with US Army Ranger and Idaho the horses we rate as the biggest dangers,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.
