Groundhog day 2?: Arsenal to face Bayern Munich again in Champions League

The joke doing the rounds before today’s Champions League draw was that Arsenal would again face Bayern Munich, who have knocked them out of the competition twice in the past four seasons. It happened again, and so Arsenal their odds of emerging from the round of 16 sit at 11/4 with William Hill, while their chances of winning the Champions League have drifted from 16/1 to 25/1. The other English clubs in the competition, Manchester City and Leicester City are 1/7 and 5/4 to qualify for the next round respectively. Manchester City are also fourth favourites to win the European competition at 9/1, while Leicester are 40/1.

Punters are not too hopeful of an all English final with the odds currently 50/1. Manchester City are perhaps the best equipped to do so, and they are 1/3 to be the British club to progress furthest in the tournament. Arsenal are 4/1 to claim the honour, while Leicester are just behind at 5/1.

“With Arsenal once again drawing the German champions, punters have lost faith in the London club’s ability to make the next round of the competition. Manchester City have been given a more favourable draw against Monaco and certainly represent the best hope for British clubs, though they will have to improve greatly on their recent performances to pose any real threat,” said William Hill spokesperson Daniel Gardre
