Zac Baffles By Election Punters
POLITICAL PUNTERS seem baffled by the Richmond Park by-election, caused by Zac Goldsmith's decision to resign as the Tory MP and stand again as an Independent.
When the betting market initially opened, the Lib Dems were installed as 4/6 favourites by William Hill, then they and Goldsmith became 5/6 joint favourites, Goldsmith nudged marginally ahead in the betting (at 8/11), now he is still favourite, but at slightly longer odds of 4/5.
'With the Tories not putting up a candidate people have to second-guess what those who voted Conservative at the General Election are likely to do - abstain, stay loyal to Zac, vote against the new Prime Minister, or switch to the Lib Dems. It is a real political conundrum' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
WILLIAM HILL NOW MAKE ZAC GOLDSMITH MARGINAL FAVOURITE AT 4/5, WITH THE LIB DEMS 10/11, LABOUR 100/1; GREENS AND UKIP EACH 200/1.
