Bow To Fire At Ripon's Biggest Race

The feature race at Ripon this weekend is the William Hill Great St Wilfrid, which is one of the biggest sprint handicaps of the season. The six furlong contest is Ripon’s most valuable race of the year, worth £70,000 in prize money.

Orion’s Bow is the 6-1 favourite with the sponsor, William Hill. The David Nicholls-trained gelding has been hugely progressive this season, winning five races in a row, before coming up just short when runner-up in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.

“We’re looking forward to a ripsnorter of a race at Ripon. Orion’s Bow has been a horse to follow this year and he looks the one to beat if continuing his impressive form,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

Fellow Dandy Nicholls stablemate Kimberella is next in the betting at 10-1, alongside Nuno Tristan, who races for last year’s winning trainer Richard Fahey.

Fahey also won the race in 2013 with Baccarat, who is back again, but now the gelding is trained by Charlie Appleby. He’s a 16-1 chance to roll back the years and win the race for a second time.

The race is named after the patron saint of Ripon, St Wilfrid, who was an English bishop. Wilfrid was abbot at Ripon and travelled extensively throughout Europe converting pagans to Christianity.

Elsewhere, in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, Home Of The Brave is William Hill’s 4-1 favourite, with Nemoralia 9-2 second-favourite and both Convey and Hit It A Bomb priced at 11-2.
