Australia: Who will be the Next UK Tory Leader

After the dust settles on the shock that was the Brexit, attention now shifts towards the leadership of the United Kingdom. One of the most immediate and dramatic ramifications of the U.K.'s vote to leave the EU was David Cameron's announcement that he will step down as Prime Minister. With Cameron vowing to be gone by the Conservative Party conference in October, several leading contenders to succeed him as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party - and therefore potentially Prime Minister – are emerging.

The current favourite is Boris Johnson, the former Major of London, who was one of the most prominent figureheads of the leave campaign. Next in betting are current government ministers Home Secretary Theresa May as well as the MP for Surrey Heath Michael Gove representing some value.

“Despite Boris Johnson being the clear front runner, these are clearly unchartered waters for the UK and there really aren’t any overly clear indicators of who will fill David Cameron’s vacated position” a William Hill spokesperson said.

In the turbulent political landscape prevailing in the UK, the next leader will surely be scrutinized like never before.
