Australia: Barnaby Joyce Firms As Truss Teases

As speculation continues in Canberra that Nationals party leader Warren Truss is set to step aside in March, William Hill has again trimmed the odds that his deputy, Barnaby Joyce, will take the top job come election time.

News of a possible announcement from Truss yesterday saw Joyce’s odds come in to $1.30 from $1.75, but he faces the genuine possibility of a challenge from the Riverina’s Michael McCormack.

"Betting and politics both rely heavily on the numbers and if they are to be believed, it’s looking likely that the National’s best will be Barnaby come Election Day," says William Hill's Tim Ashworth.

"Then again, Truss might be playing everyone and decide not to step aside after all. That would be some move!”
