70.2% Of Political Punters Back Brexit

BOOKMAKERS William Hill say that 70.2% of the bets they have taken so far are for a 'Leave' vote in the EU Referendum, with the other 29.8% for 'Remain'.

'If the betting was an opinion poll it would be showing a massive majority for Leave' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. 'However, if you look at the actual amounts of money gambled, there is a different slant to the story, with 74.6% of stakes for Remain, 25.4% for Leave.'

When William Hill began taking bets in February when the date of the EU Referendum was confirmed, Remain was installed as 4/11 (73%) favourite with Leave 2/1 (33%); Remain has been favourite throughout the campaign so far. However, the last week has seen a distinct move towards Leave, with the odds cut from 9/2 (18% chance) to a current 11/4 (27%), while Remain has lengthened from 1/7 (87%) to 2/7 (77%).

Currently the biggest ever political betting event was the Scottish Referendum, on which William Hill alone took £3.2m of bets, equating to an industry turnover of some £20m. 'The signs are that the EU Referendum could well set a new record turnover for a political event and become the first on which over £20m is gambled with British bookies' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe, 'The biggest bet so far placed with William Hill is a £100,000 stake from a woman in central London for a Remain outcome at odds of 2/5, which stands to make a profit of £40,000.'
