William Hill - Grand National Story so Far Today...

William Hill expect a record turnover in excess of £30million on the Grand National.

A major factor on the betting bonanza so far today is the heavily-backed favourite Shutthefrontdoor, which will be ridden by AP McCoy – he’s been cut from odds of 10/1 to 7/1 as the liabilities increase.

William Hill are taking a greater number of bets on Shutthefrontdoor than predicted and at this rate it could be heading towards a £30million payout for William Hill punters. It is looking increasingly likely that Shutthefrontdoor could start at odds of less than 5/1 – which would make him the shortest-priced favourite since Red Rum in 1975.

Peak betting figures across William Hill’s online and mobile app are set to top 10,000 bets per minute – that’s three times as many transactions as Amazon UK on Black Friday – and a similar number of bets are expected in William Hill shops.

“This is the biggest wave of betting we have seen for a jockey in the history of the Grand National. Not since Red Rum has there been such support and the flurry of bets shows no signs of abating. We are on course for a record-breaking Grand National and if Shutthefrontdoor wins, it will hit the bookmakers where it hurts. While it would be a fairy-tale for AP McCoy if he wins in his final ever Grand National, it would be a nightmare for bookmakers.”
