Sunshine for 200,000 Customers as Many Clouds Wins National

200,000 William Hill customers are celebrating after backing this year’s winner of the Grand National, Many Clouds. William Hill will be paying out £13million to the lucky punters.

The Leighton Aspell-ridden victor returned at odds of 25/1, with the winning jockey landing the race for the second year in a row. No jockey has ridden the Grand National winner three years in a row and William Hill offer odds of

The huge gamble on 6/1 favourite Shutthefrontdoor fuelled the highest-ever amount wagered on a horse race in history – over £30million with Britain’s biggest bookmaker William Hill. Peak betting figures across Hill’s channels were recorded, with the industry giants taking around 25,000 bets per minute just before the start of the Grand National.

William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke said: “It was a record breaking race in terms of popularity with Britain’s public punting more than ever before. Not quite a record breaking win for bookmakers with plenty of punters picking up winnings, but there’s enough in the coffers to celebrate tonight”

However, it wasn’t a fairy-tale end to the Grand National career of AP McCoy, who finished fifth on 6/1 favourite Shutthefrontdoor.

But, the wave of public affection for the outgoing Champion Jockey, shown by the massive gamble on his mount Shutthefrontdoor, has persuaded William Hill to offer just Even-Money that he receives a knighthood by the 2nd January 2016 (he was 16/1 for a knighthood in February when he announced he would retire this season).

“AP McCoy is a sporting icon and though he couldn’t win his final Grand National, his achievements over the last 20 years are unparalleled and it is unlikely anyone will ever surpass him as a the greatest jump jockey of all time,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke. “He deserves a knighthood.”

William Hill still think McCoy has the leading chance of winning the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, making him 4/1 favourite to lift the prestigious award – he was 50-1 at the start of the year.
