Nicholls Nailed-On But Jockey Title Up For Grabs

As the 2015/16 National Hunt season gets underway, the betting suggests Paul Nicholls is nailed-on for the Trainers’ Championship, with William Hill offering just 1-5 that he successfully defends his title. Nicky Henderson is the nearest challenger at 5-1, while Irish master Willie Mullins is a 10-1 long shot.

But the jockeys’ title is really up for grabs, with perennial runner-up Richard Johnson leading the market at 5-4. Sam Twiston-Davies is the most popular selection with William Hill, with more bets placed on him than any other. However, it is Sean Bowen who carries the biggest liability at odds of 25-1.

“The betting suggests they may as well give the Trainers’ prize to Paul Nicholls now, but the jockeys’ title is anything but a certainty,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

National Hunt Trainers’ Championship: 1-5 Paul Nicholls, 5-1 Nicky Henderson, 10-1 Willie Mullins, 20-1 Jonjo O’Neill, 33-1 Philip Hobbs

National Hunt Jockeys’ Championship: 5-4 Richard Johnson, 7-4 Sam Twiston-Davies, 5-1 Tom Scudamore, 8-1 Barry Geraghty, 25-1 Noel Fehily, Sean Bowen, 33-1 Aidan Coleman, 50-1 Tom Cannon
