Glorious Goodwood: Hughes Favourite For Swansong Title

Richard Hughes is 2-1 favourite with William Hill to be the top jockey at this week’s Glorious Goodwood racing festival, as he marks the final chapter in his riding career.

Hughes was top jockey for four consecutive years (2010 -2013), before losing out by one winner to William Buick last year. The jockey is set to retire from the saddle after his final ride at Glorious Goodwood.

“Richard Hughes has had great success at Goodwood over the years and it would be a fitting end to his career to finish as top jockey at Glorious Goodwood,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

James Doyle is second-favourite at 10-3 in William Hill’s ‘Racing UK Glorious Goodwood Top Jockey Award’ betting, with Joseph O’Brien at 9-2 and last year’s top rider William Buick at 13-2.

Racing UK Glorious Goodwood Top Jockey Award: 2-1 Richard Hughes, 10-3 James Doyle, 9-2 Joseph O’Brien, 13-2 William Buick, 10-1 Joe Fanning, Paul Hanagan, 14-1 Andrea Atzeni, Frankie Dettori

Key Race – The Qatar Sussex Stakes

The best quality race of the week may be the Qatar Sussex Stakes, which was set to feature two of the finest horses over a mile this season, but dual-Guineas winner Gleneagles has been pulled out on account of the ground.

However, the race still has Solow who has been equally impressive winning three Group 1s, including the Dubai Turf and Prix d’Ispahan, with his latest victory coming in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

William Hill price Solow as the 8-13 favourite for the Qatar Sussex Stakes.

His key rival could be 5-1 chance Night Of Thunder, who won the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May.

In the betting market, Gleneagles had been drifting before being scratched from the race (from 8-11 out to 10-11 before his withdrawal).

Solow is the most popular in the current market, with William Hill shortening his odds from a biggest price of 7-4. He was 11-10 before Gleneagles dropped out and is now 8-13 favourite.

“The market is being shaped by the weather, with punters backing Solow to prevail on softer ground,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

Qatar Sussex Stakes: 8-13 Solow, 5-1 Night Of Thunder, 7-1 Arod, 10-1 Belardo, Cougar Mountain, 22-1 Here Comes When, 25-1 Bossy Guest, 40-1 Gabrial, (EW 1/5 Odds Places 1,2,3)
