Could Grand National Winner Point To General Election Outcome?
FIVE DAYS before the 1992 General Election (won by the Tories) took place, a horse called Party Politics was the topically named 14/1 winner of the Grand National, delighting coincidence punters everywhere.
With just under five weeks to go before this year's General Election, a horse called Unioniste and quoted at 25/1 by William Hill, could possibly win Saturday's Grand National, with jockey Noel Fehily carrying colours which might point towards the outcome of the Election - they are Labour red and Lib Dem yellow - and William Hill offer 8/1 about a Labour-Lib Dem coalition government as a result of the General Election.
'Party Politics cost us an eight figure fortune as the name appealed to everyone aware of the proximity of the uiminent General Election - now comes Unioniste, clearly a name which Labour voters will be able to relate to, (in French it means 'member of a trade union') with the horse's colours offering a link to a possible Lab-Lib coalition government' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.'One Hill's client from Stockport will collect £10,000 if Unioniste wins, after staking £400 on the horse.'
William Hill, who expect to take £30million on the big race have already dubbed this year's General Election 'the first Political Grand National' as they anticipate a record betting turnover on the poll - 'This will be the biggest ever political betting event, and the first to produce an eight figure betting turnover' said Graham Sharpe.
