Champion Shockey! McCoy Retires

AP McCoy has announced his retirement from the saddle and William Hill, for whom the Champion is a sporting ambassador were quick to praise his contribution to the sport. McCoy made the surprise announcement immediately after winning the Game Spirit Chase on Mr Mole and will retire at the end of the season.

William Hill’s CEO, James Henderson, said: ''It is difficult to summon up enough superlatives about a jockey of AP's calibre. It would also be too easy to trot out the obvious bookmakers' jokes about how we're glad to see the back of him. We're not. We have immense pride that he has been a fantastic William Hill ambassador for nearly four years. I think we all know we will never see his kind again, and his contribution to racing has been immense.”

Meanwhile, William Hill offer odds of 6-4 for Richard Johnson to claim the Champion’s crown next season.

The reaction to the Game Spirit Chase was rather overshadowed by AP McCoy’s shock announcement, but Mr Mole was a good winner and has been trimmed to 10-1 from 33-1 for the Champion Chase. Sire De Grugy, who unseated his rider in the race has been pushed out by William Hill to 6-1 from 4-1, while Sprinter Sacre has been trimmed as a result to 2-1 favourite from 5-2.
