Bookmakers Predict Record breaking Tournament

Bookmakers William Hill are expecting the biggest Cricket World Cup of all time and are forecasting £20million will be wagered with the firm on the tournament.

“This is a huge event and to give a comparison, if the tournament is as popular as we think it will be, then the figures are not far off what we would take on something like the Grand National,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke. “In-play betting will be a key part of the Cricket World Cup and we will take more bets during matches than before them.”

England and New Zealand are the best-backed teams so far, but one punter stands to win £100,000 if Ireland are the tournament winners. Ireland aren’t popular with most punters though, with only eight bets placed on them! England are 9/1 to be the Champions, while Ireland are 250/1 outsiders.

Australia are the 7/4 favourites with William Hill to win the ICC World Cup, with South Africa next in the betting at 3/1 and New Zealand third in the list at 9/2.

Two South Africans have been heavily backed to be the ‘Top Tournament Batsman’ – AB de Villiers (odds of 10/1) and Hashim Amla (7/1 favourite) have both been strongly supported. Mitchell Starc is a bogey in the book and is 9/1 favourite to be the ‘Top Tournament Bowler’.

England have a tough opening game against co-hosts Australia and are outsiders in the betting with William Hill at odds of 15/8. Australia are odds-on favourites at 2/5.

One Australian punter is supremely confident that the co-hosts will open with a win and has had a massive $60,000 Australian Dollars (approximately £30,000) with William Hill’s trading offices in Australia.

“Punters in Australia are confident that their side will beat England and as much as we’d love to stick it to the Aussies, given the strength of the home team, it could be a real headache for England,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.
