Horse Racing Winter Festival By Joe Crilly

AP McCoy Backs Don Cossack For King George Glory

William Hill ambassador AP McCoy thinks Don Cossack will win the William Hill King George VI Chase on Boxing Day.

Writing in his latest blog for William Hill, the winner of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Lifetime Achievement award says he thinks Gordon Elliott’s horse is the one to beat.

“As long as the ground doesn’t get too heavy, I would be very keen on Don Cossack. He’s a much better horse on better ground and I think the less rain we have the better for him, but I think Don Cossack will win the King George.”

One of the other big races at the William Hill Winter Festival is the williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle. Faugheen is odds-on favourite to prevail for the second year in a row, but he lost his unbeaten record last time at Punchestown.

AP McCoy on the williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle: “I think it was just a blip from Faugheen at Punchestown. The biggest shock of all was that Willie Mullins couldn’t believe he got beat. I find it hard to think the opposition in the williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle will be good enough to beat Faugheen if he shows what he is capable of. The others just don’t have the same level of ability.”

And the 20-time Champion Jockey also reveals in his latest blog that getting the leg-up on an iconic horse is his favourite Christmas memory.

“The best Christmas present I’ve ever received was getting the ride on Best Mate and winning the King George.”

McCoy also admitted he wishes he was riding in the top races rather than watching them, but no matter how tempting, he won’t be riding in the William Hill King George again.

“It is harder to watch the big races like the King George. At the same time the reality is that while it’s difficult for me to retire, it’s a lot more difficult for those who have been less fortunate. I was lucky that I had a lot of success.”

The full AP McCoy blog will be available from 23rd December on williamhill.com and williamhillplc.com. AP discusses picking up the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Lifetime Achievement award, what he’ll be doing for Christmas and whether a knighthood could be on the cards.
