2/1 female PM by 2021

With no female Prime Minister since Maggie Thatcher, William Hill believe it is an odds-on shot that it will be 2026 or later before the next one is in place.

Hills offer 2/1 that there will be another female PM before 2021; 6/1 that the next one will take over some time between Jan 1, 2021 and Dec 31, 2025, and 4/6 that there will not be another before Jan 1, 2026. Hills are also offering 5/1 that the next Prime Minister in succession to David Cameron will be female.

But with a number of high profile female politicians in place to succeed David Cameron and Ed Miliband it is far from impossible that a woman will be leading at least one of the major Parties shortly after the General Election outcome is confirmed.

'Despite the number of high profile women in politics it is surprising that it has been almost a quarter of a century since a woman was running the country - but we suspect that may not change any time soon' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Boris Johnson is 9/4 favourite to succeed David Cameron but a number of women are in the running, with Theresa May 9/2 second favourite; with Esther McVeigh 25/1; Liz Truss and Nicky Morgan both 33/1 and Maria Miller 50/1.

Andy Burnham is 2/1 favourite to succeed Ed Miliband but Yvette Cooper is 5/2 second favourite, with Rachel Reeves at 18/1; Stella Creasy 25/1; Lisa Nandy ; Rushanara Ali both 33/1; Harriet Harman 40/1.
