The William Hill King George VI Chase is officially a favourite-backers’ paradise after historical research of the top UK staying chases.

Over the last 20 years, the King George has provided the most winning favourites across the major British steeplechases over a distance of three miles or more.

Punters backing the ‘unnamed favourite’ in the King George since 1994 would be £18.30 in profit – the highest level-stakes profit across the top races.

“Silviniaco Conti and Champagne Fever are both very popular in the betting and already look like the two we want to beat on Boxing Day,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke. “It’s traditionally a race for favourites, but it’s hard to call which of the pair will start as the King George jolly.”

WH Steeplechase races 1994 - 2014

Paul Nicholls is the 7-4 favourite to train the winner of the William Hill King George VI Chase. In addition to the reigning King George Champion, Silviniaco Conti (11-4 Favourite), Nicholls also has recent Ascot winner Al Ferof (8-1), Bury Parade (50-1) who pulled-up in the Amlin 1965 Chase behind his stable-mate and six-year-old Wonderful Charm (33-1).

Champagne Fever (4-1 Second-Favourite) leads the Irish challenge for Willie Mullins, who also trains Ballycasey (25-1) and Boston Bob (20-1). Mullins is 10-3 to train the winner.

Philip Hobbs could also have a trio of contenders, including in-form Charlie Hall winner and Betfair Chase runner-up Menorah (10-1). Captain Chris (16-1), who went so close to winning the race in 2012 only to be pipped by Long Run, also represents Philip Hobbs, along with stable-mate Wishfull Thinking (33-1). Hobbs is 13-2 to train the winner of the Boxing Day feature.
