Referendum Smashes Betting Records

THE SCOTTISH REFERENDUM has unexpectedly become the biggest political betting event ever, say bookmakers William Hill.

'We obviously expected a fair amount of interest - but exceeding £2million in betting turnover - equivalent to the last General Election and US Presidential Election added together - has made this an unprecedented event in political betting history.' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Hills have seen one customer stake £800,000, and another £200,000 - both on a 'No' outcome, while the largest bets placed on 'Yes' have been two £10,000 wagers.

'The £800,000 was placed in one of our South West London betting shops and will return £973,000 to the client if successful' added Sharpe.

Hills have made No their odds-on favourite since the market opened - the longest odds offered for it have been 2/5 and it has been as short as 1/12, but is currently trading at 2/9 - while Yes is currently 3/1, having been as long as 6/1 and as short as 7/4.

As well as betting on the outcome, Hills have also created markets on what percentage of the vote each option will receive; the percentage turnout of voters; and what currency an independent Scotland will use.

'On the back of the Referendum are expecting record figures for next year's General Election and the next US Presidential Election' added Sharpe.
