Sports Personality By Joe Crilly

Massive SPOTY Upset!

It was Lewis Hamilton who won this year’s Sports Personality of the Year upsetting the odds. McIlroy’s odds touched 1/9 during the SPOTY ceremony with Lewis' drifting to 9/2.

McIlroy had been the punters’ favourite with a number of four and five figure bets placed on him since he won the Open. His odds at some points this year had gone as low as 1/8 to win the award in the build up to the show.

It is this year’s two favourites who head the betting for next year’s Sports Personality. Lewis Hamilton is 4/1 favourite with Rory McIlroy 6/1. Andy Murray rounds off the top three in the betting at 8/1.

“We are pinning our hopes on the Cricket and Rugby World Cups but should British hopes fall flat in both of these competitions, we could have a back to back winner for the first time in 60 years of the Sports Personality,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.
