Golf: Changing of the Guard as Rory Outroars Tiger

For the first time in history, Rory McIlroy is now a shorter price than Tiger Woods to break Jack Nicklaus’ record for Major wins.

Bookmaker William Hill has pushed out the odds on Tiger Woods breaking the Major record to 8/1 from 5/1 (Jack Nicklaus has 18 wins).

It means that McIlroy, who is 6/1 to record 19 or more Major wins is now the favourite to beat the great Jack Nicklaus’ total.

Tiger Woods is back swinging his club at the Hero World Challenge this week, but the bookies reckon despite recovering from his troublesome back problems, he is very unlikely to topple the career Major record.

“Anyone who thinks Tiger can still break the record should put their money where their mouth is, we’re more than happy to take those bets,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke. “Tiger used to look invincible, but now he’s a shadow of his former self and Rory is the powerhouse.”

However, William Hill still think it’s more likely that Tiger will win a Major in 2015 than get engaged to his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn.

It’s 3/1 that Tiger pops the question (a ten pound win would return £40 if it happens), but 9/4 for him to win a Major next year (a ten pound stake wins £32.50).

William Hill Odds:

Tiger Woods Special - Major Record: 8/1 19 Or More Career Major Wins, 1/20 18 Or Fewer Career Major Wins
