Sports Personality By Joe Crilly

BBC SPOTY: Rory Is Man To Beat?

It is Rory McIlroy who heads the betting for this year’s Sports Personality at 2/5 with William Hill making Lewis Hamilton the 7/4 second favourite. McIlroy has been the best backed selection this year and has been the subject of two £10,000 bets at Britain’s biggest bookmaker.

The first large wager was placed in Liverpool in July at odds of 5/6 with the second placed in Yorkshire just last week at odds of 4/9.

“Since he won the Open, the Sports Personality betting has been all about McIlroy, however, Lewis Hamilton’s Drivers Championship victory has thrown a small spanner in the works,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “Recent years have seen favourites such as Jess Ennis, Darren Clarke and Jenson Button fall by the wayside so there could yet be another twist in this one.”

Sports Personality of the Year: 2/5 Rory McIlroy; 7/4 Lewis Hamilton; 33/1 Gareth Bale; 40/1 Jo Pavey; 80/1 Charlotte Dujardin; 100/1 Adam Peaty; 100/1 Carl Froch; 100/1 Kelly Gallagher; 100/1 Lizzy Yarnold; 100/1 Max Whitlock
