Meet Mike | Retail Training Partner
We sat down with Michael Burke to get his behind the bet story as a Retail Training Partner.
Tell us about your role and what it involves:
My role ranges from welcoming new starters as they walk through the door on day one to working with the Area Managers making sure we have the right people in the right place with the right skills.
How do you go one better every day?
I always make sure I’m prepared for the day ahead – a good colleague one told me “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail” & I’ve been mindful of this saying ever since.
Can you tell us a bit about your career story?
My first contact with William Hill was when I attended a careers open day in a Birmingham hotel. I was engaged by the Area Manager who gave a mini presentation on life in a betting shop.
My first day was in the Fore St shop and I was lucky to have ‘Nick’ as my manager. He was a real expert and made the days so much fun. I became a shop manager about six months later and was here to stay. Working all around The Midlands I met some real characters – both colleagues & customers.
One of my most memorable days was when one of my favourite customers ‘Joe’ won £82,000 just after Christmas. His football Acca come in. My Area Manager wasn’t too pleased as if probably wrecked his bonus but I was happy to present ‘Joe’ with his winning cheque.
On 18/05/18 I reached my 30 year anniversary date. As with most jobs there are good days & bad days but as long as there’s more of the latter I’ll be staying around for a few more years.
