Cool tech, warm weather
Meet Martin, Head of Technology for Sportsbook.
Martin leads a team of talented techies in Gibraltar. Here’s his story.
I joined William Hill as an Architect. The role came at a great time for me, both personally and professionally. I left another betting company as they were restructuring, and the chance to move to Gibraltar seemed ideal. Good weather, and an interesting role in a well-known company. Plus my wife speaks Spanish - so it worked well for us both.
I’ve been lucky enough to be promoted a few times here, through making contributions and being recognised for doing a good job. William Hill provides an environment where this is possible. I moved from being a Technical Architect to Solution Architect, to Architect Team Lead, and now I’m Head of Technology for an area of the business that I love.
What’s it like to work for William Hill?
People may think that we’re a slow paced business because we’re so large, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In terms of technology, we’ve changed a lot in the last couple of years. We have a new structure, people are able to pursue new tech and ideas that they want to introduce. There’s a good framework in the organisation, we’re transparent and collaborative.
What makes me stay?
Honestly, it’s a very exciting time to be here. The first fruits of the digital transformation can be seen – and there is a lot more to come.
What’s your proudest moment?
Technically, I’m most proud of the Microservices Architecture – it’s a really important piece of work that seems to fulfil the business’s expectations.
Personally, people tell me that they can see a lot of change happening in the last 6 months or so since I’ve been in my new role. It’s nice to have had influence in something positive.
