On an average day, our high-street shops process some one million betting slips. We are part of the communities we work in. At home, we provide a much-needed traditional presence on the high-street, somewhere sociable where local people can go for a chat with friendly staff and a bit of community spirit. We know that we are appreciated - because more than six million people use betting shops in the UK each year.
As an industry, we contribute £1bn in tax, and having a bet on events such as the Grand National is a great British tradition.
We are also committed to making a positive difference in local communities wherever we are based. Our Close to HOME Community Commitment supports colleagues to volunteer their time and skills to help good causes in areas where our colleagues live and work - whether that’s helping repaint a local community centre, serving breakfast at a homeless shelter, or running employability workshops for young people. This is in addition to work we do to assist unemployed people in getting back to work through training and mentorship schemes.

Often, we are misrepresented by anti-gambling campaigners, however. Now, the government has announced a review of the industry, looking into fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs), maximum stakes and the value of prizes. If you would like to know more, please visit the Back Your Local Bookie website.
There is talk of clamping down on parts of our industry to stop problem gambling. It is right that we are responsible, and - as you know, we take that aspect of our work very seriously indeed. Along with others in the industry we have developed a clear roadmap of actions to assist problem gamblers such as automated alerts on gaming machines and making self-exclusion from multiple companies a one stop process.
We want to get the message out about the positive things we do. Distorted stories don’t reflect the support our customers have for our shops and could result in unnecessarily burdensome regulation, or damaging tax hikes.
Hundreds of bookies have closed in recent years and we want to stop that decline.
We want Government to realise that there is a huge level of public support for bookies, and for the freedom to have a flutter at racetracks, in our high-street community shops, or online.
We want to show decision-makers the valuable work we do in communities across Britain, the dedicated staff we employ, and the support we give to sport.
The only way we can help to protect the brilliant work that our local bookies are doing for our communities is by being as vocal as possible about our support for them.
We want to spread the good news about bookies and present a united front. That is why we have launched the Back Your Local Bookie campaign. We are encouraging our staff, customers, friends and family to sign our petition, and share it on Facebook to get the message out about the wonderful work you do.
