Labour Soon To Be Cooped Up?
YVETTE COOPER has emerged as favourite with William Hill to succeed Jeremy Corbyn as elected Labour leader after a gamble saw her odds tumble from 25/1 (4% chance) at the start of the week to 7/2 (22%).
Despite finishing only third in the contest won by Jeremy Corbyn when he became leader, Yvette Cooper's recent strong performance in parliament seems to have fuelled a rush to back her to take over when the current leader stands down.
'This is certainly the least anticipated gamble of the campaign so far, and one which we certainly didn't see coming' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. 'After she was beaten when Jeremy Corbyn initially won the leadership, Yvette Cooper's future looked to be in the past, however, her star is once again on the rise – as has been that of her husband, albeit in different surroundings.'
Hills believe that there is likely to be a vacancy for the role of Labour leader by 23.00 on June 9, 2017 – offering 4/7 that Jeremy Corbyn has announced his resignation by then, 5/4 that he has not done so.
Hills are offering Labour at 16/1 to win the General Election with an overall majority – the longest odds at which they have been offered this century.
TO BE NEXT ELECTED LABOUR LEADER; 7/2 Yvette Cooper; 4/1 Keir Starmer; 7/1 Clive Lewis; 12/1 Dan Jarvis; David Miliband; 14/1 Lisa Nandy; 16/1 Chuka Umunna. Others on request.
TO WIN GENERAL ELECTION...1/7 Conservative overall majority; 11/2 Hung Parliament; 16/1 Labour overall majority.
