Horse vs Hound - Who Wins The Head To Head?
Horse racing’s Epsom Derby and greyhound racing’s William Hill Derby both take place on Saturday and to celebrate, William Hill organised a one-off race between two of nature’s speediest animals in an attempt to determine who comes out on top.
Ferry Forth Fran, a finalist in the 2015 William Hill St Leger (one of the top staying greyhound races), was pitched in to a battle with winning thoroughbred racehorse Limerick Lord at Towcester Racecourse. Partnering Limerick Lord in the saddle was leading jockey Adam Beschizza.
Towcester is a rare venue as it has both a greyhound and horse racing track, with the winning post in line with each other.
So who wins? The greyhound or the horse?
Horse – top speed 43mph (70km/h)
Greyhound – top speed 46mph (74km/h)
The Handicap: With the greyhound faster at accelerating and with a slightly higher top speed, William Hill assessed the greyhound should race over 655metres, with the horse to race over 610 metres, in theory providing as close a race as possible.
“The greyhound has come out on top on this occasion, but if you ran the race again, it could be a different result as there was just 0.7seconds between them!”
“Horses and greyhounds are both magnificent, fast animals and it’s exciting that both Derby races will be held on the same day, just ten miles from each other,” said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.
“We think Frankie Dettori and his horse Wings Of Desire could start favourite in the Derby at Epsom, as he is such a popular jockey. In the William Hill Greyhound Derby, Jaytee Jet is the dog to beat.”
Ferry Forth Fran is trained by Champion Greyhound Trainer Mark Wallis and assistant Kevin Ulla (who is pictured in the photographs).
Limerick Lord is trained by Julia Feilden and owned by Steve Clarke & Partners.
