Ed Miliband Backs Smith - But £60,000 Punter Backs Corbyn
AFTER a William Hill customer in a Durham betting shop staked £60,000 on Jeremy Corbyn to defeat Owen Smith in the Labour leadership race, Hills cut his odds from 1/16 (94%chance) to 1/20 (95%) - and lengthened their odds for Owen Smith, who has been supported by former leader Ed Miliband, from 7/1 (12%) to 8/1 (11%).
'The customer – in his sixties- told staff he was on holiday from Cheltenham and that his last bet had been £100,000 on the undefeated superstar racehorse Frankel, who was always a big odds-on favourite to win his races. He considers Corbyn to be a political Frankel in terms of the current race' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
Meanwhile, Hills said they had no plans to shorten Smith's odds after he was endorsed by former leader Miliband. 'Some may say we should have lengthened Smith even further after Miliband supported him' added Sharpe.
WILLIAM HILL: LABOUR LEADER RACE: 1/20 Corbyn; 8/1 Smith.
WHEN WILL NEXT GENERAL ELECTION TAKE PLACE? 7/4 2016; 7/2 2017; 22/1 2018; 22/1 2019; 8/11 2020.
