Meet Wojciech Sromek I Sports Channel, Front-end Architect
He’s responsible for helping Product with all of the business initiatives that touch the front-end Sportsbook site.
Tell us about your role and what it involves:
As a front-end architect, I am responsible for all of the tech aspects of client facing applications in the Sports channel. In my day-to-day work, I strive to accommodate all of the needs of our Product teams and introduce technical innovation into our Sportsbook. I also act as a support and guidance for our technological teams and I try to promote interdepartmental cooperation on the architecture level.
What excites you about tech at William Hill?
The technology in William Hill caters to millions of users every day. It is really complex, not always obvious and constantly evolving. My biggest ambition here is to facilitate a process in which we will be able to learn everything there is to learn about how to make our services the simplest they could be while providing the best performance possible. I am passionate about spreading the knowledge and making our people grow together with our technology.
Which projects are you most proud of that you've worked on here?
There are two that I am most proud about.
The first and foremost is what my team was all about. The performance. Since the beginning of my work as a Development Lead my team and I managed to achieve substantial improvements in our Sportsbook performance which translated directly to our users’ satisfaction and engagement.
Secondly, we participated in Spitfire project which is an initiative meant to introduce our Sportsbook in Spanish and Italian markets. During this project my team was tasked with delivering and integration of previously developed core components into the William Hill's Sportsbook. This task was carried out in close cooperation with Sitebase team (one of the teams from Core channel) and was delivered ahead of the deadline.
How do you go one better every day?
I try to be as open as possible to ideas and people. In the Tech community, we work with a lot of extremely talented and brilliant people who voice their ideas on a daily basis. I believe that the essence of going one better is the act of supporting each other and making sure that we grow as a whole because we all care about the growth of each other. It means sharing our knowledge, supporting our colleagues, giving recognition where it is due and striving to be your best possible self every day.
Can you tell us a bit about your career story?
I have started out my developer training during my college years when I was working on some minor projects for the student’s council. After graduating university, I went to work in a family-run IT company where I was responsible for design and implementation of a document circulation system for one of the discount chains operating on Polish market. After the project was finished I decided to look for a place where I could take my skills to the next level and ended up working in a Scandinavian media company Schibsted where I worked on solutions for both local and nation-wide newspapers in Norway and Sweden. This work has allowed me to grow tremendously and I wanted to try my skills in a new environment as a Development Leader. After a year spent in this position I was offered the current role and here I am, working to make the WH Sportsbook the fastest betting site in the world! =)
